One of the reasons is that it can form a thin protective layer on the metal surface, and this protective layer is the oil film. Oil film exists at any time, high viscosity oil is oil film thick, thin oil is oil film thin. When the engine is running, only the oil film is not broken to protect the engine.

First of all, the oil film has many properties, each property has a different role:

Strength of oil film

The strength of the oil film is a very important property of the oil film, with the ability to resist pressure without rupture, and can maintain sufficient oil film thickness, thus preventing the friction surface direct contact. Through the query data shows that the oil film strength has a parameter, called "HTHS".

This parameter is the apparent viscosity obtained by capillary viscosity test of oil at 150℃, which is also called power viscosity. Because HTHS reflects the adhesion ability of the lubricant between the piston and the cylinder, and between the shaft and the shaft tile, and is related to the oleophobic or polarizing agent added to the lubricant, it is interpreted as the oil film strength.

Also, HTHS is directly related to burning oil or not. If the positive pressure between the piston cylinder due to the oil film strength decreases, then the lubricant adhesion ability to follow the decline, once the oil film is squeezed, the oil consumption will always be accompanied by the car. In short, excessive oil consumption is because the oil film strength is too low, that is, HTHS is low, so you should choose a higher HTHS oil.

Thickness of oil film

Since there is a film, there will be thin and thick, the thinness of the oil film is how to measure it? Can be simply understood as: high viscosity oil is oil film thick, thin oil is oil film thin. Why do you say so? Let's look at the definition of viscosity. Viscosity is the internal resistance of a fluid, so the viscosity of a lubricant is often referred to as the thickness of the oil.

Therefore, when the engine is running, only the oil film is not broken to protect the engine. If the oil film is thin and ruptures during operation, engine wear will be high. Here involves a key indicator, is 100 degrees kinematic viscosity.

100 degrees corresponds to the engine water temperature, this kinematic viscosity reflects the engine running lubricant fluidity and flow resistance. 100 degrees of lubricant viscosity is the kinematic viscosity, said the lubricant can form the thickness of the oil film. In addition, the oil can calculate the corresponding viscosity index according to the corresponding 100℃ kinematic viscosity and 40℃ kinematic viscosity.

Lubricant Selection

In the elaboration of the index about HTHS, we mentioned a problem of oil selection. In fact, when selecting the oil in the case of meeting the HTHS requirements, we also have requirements for the 100 degree kinematic viscosity. Don't go higher if you can go lower.

The 100 degree kinematic viscosity is mainly used to describe the state of the oil in the rest of the place except the friction vice, if the viscosity is low, the car will feel lighter, and consequently, the power will feel better, and the fuel economy will also help (i.e., fuel saving). Of course, if you are very concerned about the noise, 100 degrees of viscosity a little higher, for engine noise control will help, this point for the same series of motor oil.

In terms of oil film thickness, some people say that the thicker the oil, the better, so that the oil film is thick enough to better protect the engine.

This is a misunderstanding, in fact, the engine oil viscosity is too high or too low are not good, "the right viscosity" is the best.
